What is ‘Supernatural’s Castiel’s Fate?
Now that it has been confirmed that ‘Supernatural‘ will be returning for another season, the show needs to decide what they are going to do with Castiel. When season five wraps up, so does the Misha Collins’s contract. So, should the show work on trying to renew the contract, or should they try to handle everyone’s favorite angel’s fate in a more creative way?

There is no denying that the fan’s love Castiel and most of them would love to see the angel stick around, but is that really in the best interest of the show? The apocalypse story arc is over, so does it really make sense for the angel to still hang around with Dean and Sam?
There are three ways that Supernatural’ can handle Castiel’s future.
The first scenario ‘Supernatural’ could use is the theory that Castiel no longer need in habit the body of Jimmy Novak. While this might seem implausible since the whole reason Castiel inhabited Jimmy’s body in the first place was because Jimmy would have died, it could be done. All that God would have to do is grant a reprieve, He’s done it before. Without Castiel, Jimmy would be free to tag along with Dean and Sam.
If the writers don’t want to restore Jimmy’s life, they could always have Castiel hang out and offer a hand to the Winchester boys whenever they need it. The advantage to doing this is that it would allow ‘Supernatural’ to revisit the Heaven storyline at different point during its sixth season.

The writers of ‘Supernatural’ could always take the third option, one that is not going to be popular with a lot of their fans and simply eliminate Castiel. Doing this would eliminate a cast member, help them trim costs, and explore some different options for show. And, because of the genre, just because Castiel is eliminated, doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be brought back someday.
The best thing the fans can do is sit back and watch to see what ‘Supernatural’ does with everyone’s favorite angel.

Stumbled upon this. Nice analysis, but I thought I’d point out that in general, what is good for the fans IS good for the show. Upsetting your fan base, no matter what the logical reasoning, is never a good idea. Keeping Misha around as Jimmy purely so the plot makes more sense would have been the dumbest move ever.
